Arrival in Natal

Arriving from Europe, North America and Africa, Natal is the first location you reach in Brazil. From the plane you immediately recognise its coastline with the enormous dunes, extensive beaches, the skyline of the city and of course the “Ponte de Todos - Newton Navarro " the recently opened bridge across the river Potengi. Then it is only just half an hour before you can disembark at the international airport 'Augusto Severo International Airport' of Natal.

Upon arrival you will be guided through the gate to the customs where you are friendly requested to line-up 1 by 1 to have your passport checked. This is of course only the case when you come from outside Brazil. The customs in Natal have a separate queue for people with a Brazilian passport and several counters for people from other countries. During your flight the airline company needs to provide you with 2 forms. Both of them must be filled in when you pass the customs at the airport.

The forms are:

Accompanied Baggage Declaration (Nonresident). This refers to the clearance of goods. To enlarge the form:

Arrival/Departure Card This card relates to the length of your stay, a (tourist) visa, and contains 2 sheets. Remember that 1 copy MUST be returned at departure from Brazil. To enlarge the form:

Arrival/Departure Card

Important

Fill in these forms completely to prevent all sorts of delays at the customs! Use the EXCACT data as they are listed in your passport and other official documents. It is highly recommend to have an address in Brazil. This must be filled in (e.g. Ocean Palace Hotel in Ponta Negra).

Important

Loss of the Arrival/Departure Card can cause many problems with the customs at departure. In case of loss you can expect a fine of R$150,= (about € 60,= or $ 100,=). If there are problems…. remember the majority only speak Portuguese! That does not really stimulate the beginning of a relaxed journey home, does it…

Anyway, if you stick to the rules you will easily float through customs and get your stamp in your passport and 1 copy of the Arrival/Departure Card.

Customs and Bagage ReclaimAfter that you will step into the area for the luggage reclaim. Because it is all a bit smaller than a regular international airport it isn’t that difficult to find. There are plenty of (free) available trolleys to carry your luggage. The unloading of the aircraft is generally done fairly quickly.

Everything complete? Then it is a matter of a short walk along the customs and hope that you will not be selected to open your luggage . That works no different from other international airports.

When you are through you will be requested to hand over the form Accompanied Baggage Declaration (Nonresident) to one of the Customs employees.

And then, and then…. Hello Natal….Enjoy the warm welcome!!

In the arrival hall they have provided all sorts of facilities such as buses, taxis and car-rentals for the trip to Natal and the surrounding areas. For connecting flights within Brazil you can easily go to one of the booking offices or check-in desks.
